My beloved grandmother, Shirley, recently passed away. She was really special to me and I miss her deeply. She was my hero, my best friend and my angel. Born in 1922 and the youngest of five children, she grew up fast. She was a Navy Nurse during WWII and met my grandfather while he was in sickbay after returning from duty in the South Pacific. They had their first child, Sandy, in 1946 and fifteen months later, the furnace in their duplex exploded in the middle of the night and their home was engulfed in flames. The only thing left was a metal skillet with its plastic handle melted off and the pajamas on their backs. They lost everything. Both, my grandmother and grandfather survived, but Sandy did not. Losing a child is the hardest thing a parent can face and while the tragedy devastated them, it also brought them closer together. They soon had a second daughter, Becky, my mother. Growing up with this story in our family showed me what being strong and resilient looks like and how to love. That was my Grams, pure toughness and love. I looked up to her for many reasons; for her unwavering strength, her fierce loyalty and faith, her wit, (even in her last days) and her gigantic, generous, loving heart.

Every time we saw each other, she would gently hold my face in her hands, look deep into my eyes and tell me, "Take care of you, now." It was her way of reminding me that self care is critical to survival. We must take care of ourselves, and this piece is my way of honoring her memory and her wisdom. I made this design for her for Mother's Day some time ago. It hung in her home for years and now it hangs in mine. Whenever I see it, I hear her voice, sweetly reminding me to take care of myself.

Although diminutive in size, this piece provides an invaluable reminder that no matter how we do it, we must take care of ourselves.

What does that look like for you?
