The twenty surgeries and procedures I've undergone have taken me on quite a journey. The loss I've met has led me to some very dark places and I also learned about the depth of my strength in those moments. I believe the only way out is through, and I realize the importance of embracing the darkness and my shadow- to not run away from difficult emotions and realities, but to surrender and give pain the space it needs to be and breathe. This creates opportunities for release and a better understanding of ourselves.
We all have a story and stories of survival, and we all have a shadow - it's part of the human condition. We can't know the light without experiencing the dark, and we can learn a lot from both kinds of experiences. There is hidden wisdom in the darkness that hasn't been brought into our consciousness yet. And the only way to know about those gems within is to look our shadow in the face, learn about it and embrace it as part of who we are. The dark parts can teach us a lot about ourselves and the more we learn about it the more we can grow from it.
This piece reminds me of the poetry of loss and the wisdom I've learned through my own darkness, reflecting on all the highs and lows and the sharp and soft parts of life. It tells a story of scars and loss, of perseverance, survival, the beauty we discover when we're vulnerable and honest with ourselves, and of what we can discover when we really look within. There, in the dark spaces in between, we find slivers of light and we become stronger and more beautiful with each knot we experience. Remember that you are capable of so much more than you think. New life begins in the darkness. If you're in the dark, remember that light is still within you and you will shine again. You are a process of becoming, be easy on you.
"People are like stained glass windows. We sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, our true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." -E. Kubler-Ross
